Leonard Anderson response to  Normis above email:      Viernes, 06 de Enero de 2006 08:11 p.m.

I cherish my High School years especially playing basketball with my team mates in 1956.  It was an experience that only a few have the privilege to relate.  This is particularly true after all these years.

I value with greater esteem my attending and playing b-ball at Allen Military Academy, a Jr. College at the time, in Bryan, Tx, during Sep 1956 - May 1958.  I did it with the help of two other 1956 mates, William Dickinson and Hector Chacon.

But of more consequence, was my three years of lettering at Texas A & I College in Kingsville.  While the three years were uneventful from a standpoint of being a "star", I am real proud that I clawed, kicked, and fought my way to get the coach's honor (non-solicited) to appoint me captain of the 1961 Texas A&I Javelina b-ball squad.  I say this because I am not aware that the players voted me for this honor.

I also am extremely proud of the most important decision of my college years.  That was to stay enrolled and complete the ROTC program.  It provided me with the opportunity to serve my country in the United States Army.  Very few young men in the United States of America want to do this in today's world situation.  I truly admire them for volunteering for military service.

The Army provided me with the opportunity not only to serve my country, but to live in other countries.  By so doing, I am able to further cherish our great United States of America, our culture and way of life.  This manner of life has no equal in the world today.  Even our detractors, who moan today, should attest to this.

I did get to visit a small portion of he World, to include nice places in Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America.  I once stood at zero degrees longitude and latitude on this great Earth.  About 20 some odd years later, I found myself at the half-way point between the equator and the north pole. Having been at the Equator earlier in my career, I dreamed in an instance about going to the North Pole.   At that moment, I wanted to go to Alaska and from there make it to the North Pole.  It never materialized during the trip as I ended up in the solitude of beautiful quiet mountain lake fishing for truchas.

Of all the above, my military service takes precedence.  That to me was the pinnacle of my career ,and what I could do for my country which provided opportunities and continues to do so for me and my family.

I should note that my life is still a "work in process."

Quit raising banners about me.  It will embarrass my sisters.

Not sure if they will transfer, but I have attached a picture with my daughter's "attack dog" captured about a year ago  and another taken right after  my tour in Vietnam.

Shaman;  yes, maybe you should post the rem about Leonard Anderson's  roll in the mhs '56 state champs team...they were seniors that year,  we girls were juniors, and i remember the big hoopla being state champs..some other members of
the team that i can remember, willie dickenson, andy santos, hector chacon, etc..walter herbeck and jose luis novoa were "team managers'...i know walter must have a photo of the team and all the names..there's also a photo of their reunion, years later, that's floating around somewhere...p.s. funny that you asked leonard how come he wrote such good spanish, (leonard of course in mix anglo - spanish) seems like the 'anglo' kids at mhs all learned to speak spanish from us and we learned english from them..as a matter of fact, one of the newpapers reported that the laredo champ team members were all spanish speaking, meaning, in other words, hispanic...       Normis

___Hot time at TacoTote

___the party just broke up, four solid hours of remming and jokng and eating and a few drinks, the table got bigger and bigger an we had to add tables and chairs for the late arrivals. i got there exactly at two and arrived just as Gus Perez and his lovely Linda Jo were arriving,

Norma was there of course, Dr. Chili dressed like a Dapper Dan in black and white. Sylvia Ornelas, Eddie Reyna, Raul Flores were already enjoying the treats, and in the corner table in a great big Cowboy hat was Sal, el burlap Lomas guy and two young athletes, at least one i know belongs to him. Llego Clema y Chuck, los Gallegos, Paul, Mary Helen, and her Mom, a delightful lady named Vicky Cruz and then the guy on an eternal diet, el profe Carlos Valle llego con sus Jokes.

Trays and trays of fajita, chicken strips, beans, rice and guacamole were on the table to be enjoyes by all. The tortillas were especially thin and hot and seemed to melt in your mouth. Everyone ate till they were full, y olvidate de la dieta Chale Valle.

For dessert, we had semita con Nuece that the Queen managed to sneak into the place, It went well washed down with the bud light. Cameras flashed all over the place as we posed and they posed and then we posed again. Dr. Chili se avento con sus chistecitos and of course el Profe tambien,

One by one, the remmers slowly departed most treasuring their copy of the Laredos News which has the story written by Dr. Neo. Scribbled on the tabloid were the names and phone numbers and the email addresses we shared with each other to keep in touch and hopefully we will meet again, soon, sometimes, and someplace

Re: ___Hot time at TacoTote

___my a pol o geees, i forgot yo mention some delightful folks, Alberto "Beto" Orozco was there, this man is always full of life and always in a great joyful mood,

and i had a chance to get some good notes on the development of la musica tejana frrom an elder statesman named Jose Compean. Jose and his wife were there and i talked with him on la musica de aquellos tiempos,

Jose Compean played with Beto Villa and isidro Lopez and knew Little Joe as a young kid, Jose Maria de Leon Hernandez used to hang around his bailes trying to get into the band and Fteddy Fender (Baldemar Huerta) used to hang around the bailes en el valle begging for a chance to be allowed to sing, ahhhhh, those were the days

Angel_de Todos... the two dudes were my sons on the pics. My oldest 19 year Sal III and Joe Sciaraffa. As you noticed Joe is a two year varsity Bulldog football player and regional java"Line" thrower. Missing were my youngest son Ray who was at baseball practice and Ashley who was still within her beauty sleep at noon :) and unable to attend.

I had a great time at the mini reunion. Did not get a chance to chat with everyone but I did have a great conversation with Gus and his wife. Turns out my children and his hanged on the same street way back in 96 when my kids first got back to Laredo.

Turns out that Gus and his family bought the house that my childrens grandmother lived. Small world. Raul had such great jokes and stories and a pleasure to be around. Mr. O from Dallas was there and has always a great smile. Looking foward to the next mini reunion.

El angel_de todoas was traffic cop for the mini reunion and thanks normis for getting us all together to meet the great doc Ayala ....have a great day everyday.           /s/ Sal Sciaraffa, el burlap, Lomas guy

Marin High Tigers 1956 Texas Prep "AAAA" Basketball State Champions :

Walter

On March 2, 1956, legendary South Texas Basketball Coach, William "Bill" Batey led the Martin High School Tiger team to the Texas U. I. L. "AAAA" Stae Championship. At the Final Four Tournament in Austin's Gregory Gym, the Tigers upset two highly-state ranked high school teams Houston Milby 65 - 54 and North Dallas 66 - 53. Both teams had several players over 6-5 and one had a 6-8 center. These were very talented teams who were also very well-coached by some of the best coaches in Texas high school basketball.

The Martin High Tigers of 1956 featured 12 players who worked very well together as a team. Coach Batey had a great assistant in Coach John Valls who was very instrumental in the teams success. Coach Valls was a strong hurdler and Southwest Conference Champion in hurdles competition st Baylor University in the 1940's. He did an excellent job in motivating the Tiger team.

The MHS Tigers ran a classic fast break offense and a full-court man-to-man defense which they played to perfection. The Tiger team were dubbed the "Rabbut-Runners of the Border" by the state tournament news media in Austin and after the Tigers won the state championship, newspapers throughout Texas marveled about their "Magical Season" during their run for the state title.

The members of that 1955-1956 team were Andres Santos, team captain; Philip Trammel, Willie Dickinson, Leonard Anderson, Ramiro Hernandez, Hector Chacon
(6th man); Guadalupe (Pitin) Guajardo, Enrique Mejia, Agustin (Calaca) Molina, Cruz Soto, Isidro (Chilo) Garcia and Osacr (Jimmy) Rodriguez. ( Mejia, Soto and Rodriguez were called by God and are still playing in Heaven). Phillip Trammel was the teams leading scorer, 1st Team All-State and also played in the Texas Coaches North-South All-Star Basketball Game. Andres (Andy) Santos Jr. was voted Most Valuable Player of the State Tournament and the sportswriters wrote great articles about how Santos gave a great dribbling exhibition that wouls make the Harlem Globetrotters proud in front of 10,000 fans with some 3000 from Laredo who had gone along with Father George Gloeckner to support the team in Austin.

Coach Bill Batey was selected Texas High School Basketball Coach Of The Year.

Jose Luis (Fofo;) Novoa and Walter Herbeck Jr. were the team managers that historic season.

In District, they defeated Brackenridge, Jefferson, Tech, brownsville and W. B Ray and Miller from Corpus Christi. In Bi-District Wichita Falls High School and their season record was 27 - 6.

Coach Batey made history all over Texas and the USA just like Milan High School out of Milan, Indiana, who made history a year earkier when they captured the 1954-1955 Indican High School Basketball State Championship. The movie "HOOSIERS" is based on a real-life story about how Molan H.S. won a state title in basketball with a very small enrollment of less than 60 students and they were able to defeat a big high school from Indianapolis. It was a Classic David vs Goliath story.

The Laredo Martin Tiger Team captured the imagination of Texas and the whole United States when they beat the odds by defeating Milby of Houston and North Dallas the next year the season of 1955-1956.

Some writers are thinking about writing a book on the "Tigers Magical Season." Perhaps a movie will be made to show our young Latino youth "QUE SI SE PUEDE,"
(IT CAN BE DONE.).

On Janaury 2, 1975, the Laredo Latin=American International Sports Hall of Fame had its first induction ceremony and the Glorious Bengal Tigers of 1956 were the first to be enshrined in that prestigious Latin Sports Hall. The ceremony was held at the Main Boys Club with some 400 athletes, coaches and fans attending. Another induction ceremony was held at the same MHS gym where the Tigers thrilled thousands of Laredoans on the Road to the Final Four and State Championship.

In the Spring of 1982, the MHS Tiger team were honor guests at the Texas State Tournament in Austin's Frank Erwin Center. All the State Champions of 1955-1956 from each class A to AAAA were recognized by the U.I.L.

As the year 2006 is unfolding, its important to remembered with pride how winning a State Championship 50 years ago in 1956 is still very educational in so many ways. It's amazing how 12 Mexican-Americans players were able to live an American Dream" and turn it into reality. The 1956 team or "BARRIO BOYS" who grew up and learn to play the game of basketball at the Laredo Main Boys Club captured the imagination of people all over Texas who followed the gane of basketball.

This team will always have the distinction of being one of the best high school teams in Laredo, South Texas, Texas and the United States when Mexican-Americans were not supposed to win state championships
